I want to buy but need to rent right now…

Renting makes sense in some short-term situations… but how do I find a rental in Idaho without getting scammed?

Be careful... lot's of rental scams out there

Mareen and I have helped people in the past, and currently too, who need to rent a place for the immediate future. Renting can make sense if you’re relocating to the area and you want to check things out before buying or if you need to get secure in your new job first… but renting also might be necessary because you’re not financially ready to buy a home. In any case, have a plan to make renting a short-term endeavor and not, by accident perhaps, a default way of life.

We don’t have any rentals that we manage, but we work with some great property managers. Where these property managers display their rentals… and where just about everybody else does too… is on the internet; Craigslist, Zillow and Realtor.com. Be careful… lots of scams on the internet. Do your research. And here’s where Mareen and I can help… if you find a rental and you’d like to know what the area is like, we will go out and shoot a neighborhood tour just for you! That is very helpful so that you get the right place that’s going to work for you.

So, why all this talk of rentals? I happened across this story (click here) that talked about rentals in Idaho and the various laws surrounding them. For a click-bait-ish story, it actually had some good information. I learned that both Boise and Meridian are the hot-spots with the fasting rising rent. Nampa rents have risen more slowly. I also learned that the Idaho Attorney General’s Office provides resources and guidance for tenants facing rental disputes. That could be helpful!

Treasure Valley Dave's Thoughts

For sure, housing is more unaffordable than it’s been in a long time. It’s not your fault and it’s not my fault (I don’t have a Biden bumper sticker on MY car!) but it’s something we all have to deal with. Inflation will continue to go up… it always has. You can lock in a huge part of your housing expense when you buy a home. Rents, on the other hand, will continue to rise with increased demand and with inflation. Renting for the short term is fine… but make a plan and work that plan to get into your own home.
